To: <mozilla-webmaker@lists.mozilla.org>
Cc:

Dear webmakers,

Last week-end, I was hosting a webmaker workshop during an event. Like I did a few times already. And this time, I was struck by how strenuous it is for people to have to create a persona account to save their makes.
Let me explain, the venue provided us with a dozen public computers (nice). We began the workshop by remixing makes and then I had to explain how to create a persona account to save their makes:

* Enter your personal email address
* check your email, preferably in a private browsing window (but that is not possible with gmail)
* do not store the password
* click on the link to activate the persona account
* choose a password (not your email's password)
* disconnect from your email account and clear history

It can be very hard for a lot of people: don't know their webmail address, don't know their password, afraid of being hacked, getting discouraged.

If the maker party lasts one hour, a lot of time is lost because of that.

It's really a pain compared to the simplicity of the webmaker tools.

I thought of a workaround but it would be better if we had an official way to do this. Like a sandbox or something...

* Create an email address for the event (e.g. jdll2014@mozfr.org for my event) redirecting to the maker party host email.
* use this address to create a persona account with a simple password
* connect all computers to this persona account and provide the password to the public.

Advantages:
* I know that several computers can be connected to the same account at the same time
* No need to spend time explaining how to create a persona account.
* no security risk of connecting to a personal email on a shared computer
* Easy to save makes
* all makes made during an event are grouped
* people can create their own account at home and remix their makes

Inconvenients:
* We need to create a lot of email addresses that won't be really used
* We don't explain people how to create persona account (yeah I know...)
* People can change the password on persona.org (stupid, but hey...)
* We have to change this password at the end of the event (to avoid the former point)

What could be done (I don't know if it's easy or even possible): Webmaker could provide maker parties with addresses or login, or a way to create account easily on webmaker.org. Anything to avoid the awkward part about persona wasting time on a maker party.

What's your experience on that?

Best regards

Flore
