I'm glad you are asking. How much time
you spend is up to you. We don't have any required minimum amount
of participation. If you can't make a meeting, or even multiple
meetings, that is fine. There are times when you'd see multiple
emails per day on a specific topic, but then again also a week or
two of silence if everything has been discussed in the meetings.
The meetings need someone to take minutes and prepare them for
posting to this list.

As for the "anything else", this all
depends on how much time you are willing to invest, and what
additional responsibilities you take on. Council members usually
come in with a specific topic they'd like to advance, and it takes
a bit of cat herding and persistence to achieve that given the
volunteer and limited time nature of the council. Let's say for
example you wanted to increase the support coverage for
Thunderbird. This might involve making a proposal on what the
problem is, what possible solutions are, and how we could achieve
them. Putting that together, getting feedback, reminding about
feedback, resolving comments, and converging towards something
that 4 or more council members agree on takes time and effort. As
it would be a topic you care about though, it may not seem that
much at the end.

I hope this gives you some insight into
the amount of effort required. I just saw Berna also replied, I
think 1-2 hours is a reasonable estimate for a normal week without
any special projects going on.
Time-commitment is the key reason why I have never nominated
myself - I don't want to commit to something I won't have time
for, when I already have a job and a personal life.
How much time does a person spend on work as the responsibilities
of a council member? You say "internal mailing list chatter", but
that's kind of open-ended. A high-traffic list is a big
commitment. Aside from meetings and mailing list chatter, is there
anything else?

Hello TB community members,

I hope that you have received the email titled
"[tb-election] Thunderbird Council Elections - Nomination
Deadline: Tuesday, September 23, 2020". As of this date, as
part of the normal electorate, I have not received even a
single nomination. That makes me uneasy.

I would like to urge all of you to consider whether you
want to serve as TB Council member. The last elections,
there was very little choice of candidates, so in fact I was
forced to vote for people that I did not want to vote
for, because there simply were not enough candidates.

If you care about Thunderbird, please consider whether you
want to help out in this important role. Even if you have
not been deeply involved in the Thunderbird project, but
only been helping out here and there, but you care about
Thunderbird and its future health, and you qualify,
you may stand for the TB Council. If nothing else, to fill
the candidate list, so that we have enough choice.

Please think about why you care about Thunderbird. Why it's
important for you. What you would like to see preserved.

Also, please think about what is important for you in the
project structure. Transparency, so that you know what's
going on? How the Thunderbird donations are used?
Participation, so that you have a voice and will be listened
to, esp. in important decisions that decide on the future of
the project? That people are constructive, on both ends of
an argument, and seek good solutions?

We really need to have more people standing as TB Council
candidates. People that reflect the wishes of the
Thunderbird users as a whole. We simply do not have enough
candidates. If you care about Thunderbird users and think
that you have a positive, constructive approach, please
consider to help out.

As work load, you can expect 2 meetings per month,
typically on an evening, plus internal mailing list chatter.
