Hey all!

As a follow-up to Philipp's post: Thunderbird chat has some basic
support for Matrix, but it is not yet ready for prime time (I'd
consider it "pre-alpha"). There's a meta bug tracking the work
that needs to get done [1] if anyone is interested in helping out!
I'm sure that list will grow as people are playing with it, but it
would be great to get it to the point of dogfooding!

If you have any questions, please reach out to me via email or
Matrix (@clokep:matrix.org or in #maildev:mozilla.org).

Hello friends of Thunderbird

I'd like to announce that we are making some changes to the
communication platforms we use for synchronous discussions in
the community. One of the first services Mozilla set up more
than 20 years ago was the public IRC server, which Thunderbird
has been using as a way for the community to exchange ideas and
engage into interesting discussions.

About 9 months ago, Mozilla began on a journey to find a
replacement for IRC [1] as it has also attracted bad actors and
was difficult to moderate effectively. Mozilla has selected
Matrix as a replacement for IRC and the new instance has been
running for about a month now. You may have already seen the
topic updates in Thunderbird pointing to thew new channels.
Please also note that IRC will shut down permanently on
March 1st.

Therefore, now is a good time to visit our new channels. Here
is a mapping of the most common channels:

#maildev - Thunderbird Developers -

questions -

There may have been a few other niche channels that we haven't
migrated yet, most notably #tb-bugs. The move to Matrix also
means that IRC bots will have to be changed, which is still work
in progress. #tb-bugs used to have pulsebot, which Mozilla is
working on a replacement for.

Please note that the Mozilla Community Participation Guidelines
apply on Matrix and also all other Thunderbird communication
channels. This might be a good opportunity to review or read
them [3] :-)

There are a few ways to join the conversation, you can read
more at [4]. For convenience here is a short version:

A) If you have a matrix.org account (or would prefer to)

* Just join the channels, such as #maildev:mozilla.org.
Federation will do the rest!

B) If you don't yet have an account, or are an existing
contributor with a Firefox or LDAP Account.

* Head over to chat.mozilla.org.
* Click "Sign in" and then "Sign in with single sign-on". If you
don't have an account, don't click "Create an account" but
proceed to sign in.
* Sign in with your email address or related account. You can
enter an email address if you don't have an account, or register
for a Firefox Account by clicking the Firefox Account button.
* Join the channels using above links, or e.g.
#maildev:mozilla.org

There are also a desktop and mobile apps [5]. Thunderbird is
also gaining support for Matrix, but we need to work out a few
issues before it is ready for testing.

Let me know if you have any questions or have trouble signing
in. See you on the other side!
