1. S/Mime is the standard and Thunderbird supports it.

this method of public key encryption is ignored in favor of PGP.<br>

2. Storage side encryption is an operating system / file system
issue. For years I have seen folks asking for message store
encryption. These same folk appear to think that nothing else on
their computer is worth encrypting and they are reluctant to use the
tools already provided. It Windows home does not meet your needs,
do not use it. They sell a version with encryption.<br>
