A number of us are following
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=674742">https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=674742</a> which gives a
possible path for dataloss in compact in certain error cases. The
bug comments are quite long due to, shall we say, the inexperience
of the author, but the technical issues are real. I am determined to
get a patch for this landed by at least Thunderbird 17.<br>

In the long run, this is one of the reasons that we would like to
switch to maildir as a default file format, as that format does not
need compacting. Unfortunately this will not be ready for
Thunderbird 17, though it is close, so that may mean with the new
release plans that it would not be until Thunderbird 24 in September
2013 that this would be available for common use.<br>

I would add that the fact that 34 on the 37 users who filled the
