For b, I can tell you the vast majority of web bugs[including the
one in this e-mail. :-)] declare their size, and their almost all
1by1 pixels.<br>

It's somewhat odd, since most e-mails which contain web bugs also
contain images[if nothing else, a company logo], so it would make
more sense to tack the tracking link onto an existing image.
Nevertheless, until 1by1 pixels start getting blocked by most
clients they will continue to be the norm.<br>
<br>
The reason almost all images in HTML email have their size declared
is because due to the large number of clients which do not show
images automatically if the size is not specified, the spacing for
the e-mail is off - by declaring the size even if no image is
displayed the rest of the spacing is still correct.<br>
<br>
By the same token, tracking images that are inserted in addition to
regular links are almost always 1by1 pixels so that they do not
affect the layout/design of the e-mail message.<br>
