Hi all,

Executive Summary: Please set toolkit.telemetry.enabled
to true on your Thunderbird right now :-). This will allow
us to collect anonymous performance data, and make your Thunderbird
better.

Telemetry is an infrastructure that allows us to collect performance
measurements: how much time Thunderbird spends on average reading
from the database, writing to the database, waiting for some stuff
to happen... We'd love to collect data on how our various users
fare, and for that to happen, we need everyone who wants to send
(anonymous) data to Mozilla to go to their Preferences > Advanced
> General > Config Editor, and set toolkit.telemetry.enabled
to true.

The metrics team has a dashboard-style page where we can actually
see how much time people spend waiting for sqlite reads, sqlite
fsyncs, etc. so it's valuable information for us. Plus, we're about
to land a series of improvements to Gloda, and this would allow us
to see how much of an improvement that yields.

There's also a telemetry addon that allows you to check out
the statistics for yourself, in your Thunderbird. Taras Glek was
kind enough to accept a patch of mine for his about:telemetry
addon, which means you can now install about:telemetry
for Thunderbird! It adds a new menu entry in the Tools menu
so that you can open up a new content tab containing various
histograms.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/abouttelemetry/versions/
(the new version should get preliminary review soon).

Please note that if you're a Conversations user, you need to update
(really) to the latest version http://jonathan.xulforum.org/files/gcv-nightlies/201108222154-master.xpi
(otherwise Thunderbird will crash when opening about:memory).
Yeah, it's Conversations fault, my bad.

Thanks for your participation, and please relay this to our testing
community.
