I beg to differ, we do actually use automation.py(.in) in Mailnews Bloat 
tests and in the Mozmill tests:

Before we can use mozbase we need to get review on 
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=840954, and then back out 
the releng temporary fix that was working around a busted tree.

I don't tend to watch platform these days (as too much traffic for me to 
handle) but feel free to cc me on important bugs etc, and let us know 
about more updates.
