Data Loss resulting from Compacting

Sorry you guys aren't at Mozcamp Europe!
A number of us are following
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=674742 which gives a
possible path for dataloss in compact in certain error cases. The bug
comments are quite long due to, shall we say, the inexperience of the
author, but the technical issues are real. I am determined to get a
patch for this landed by at least Thunderbird 17.
In the long run, this is one of the reasons that we would like to switch
to maildir as a default file format, as that format does not need
compacting. Unfortunately this will not be ready for Thunderbird 17,
though it is close, so that may mean with the new release plans that it
would not be until Thunderbird 24 in September 2013 that this would be
available for common use.
