New Account Types directions - should SkinkGlue be core?

I mean, if SkinkGlue makes it easier to create new account types,
wouldn't Thunderbird's built-in account types be able to take
advantage of this as well? If we decided to make any significant
changes to, say, IMAP, would it make sense to implement parts of it in
terms of SkinkGlue?
