I guess the easiest way is a post-install that moves Lightning
from Mozilla Thunderbird\distribution\extensions to Mozilla
Thunderbird\extensions

We don't have an ini-switch or similar, the extension is
automatically installed and can be disabled using the bar.

Would that work for you?
I need some help deciding the best way to NOT install lightning
with TB38.0.1.

Background on how I deploy Thunderbird/Lightning in my
enterprise:

I deploy both Thunderbird and Lightning (semi-separately) to our
Windows clients using desktop management software.
-TB is installed using the /INI= command line switch for a
silent installation.
-Lightning .xpi is unpacked and copied to \Program Files\Mozilla
Thunderbird\extensions\ for "global" installation. This is done
by the desktop management software. I do a "global" install
because most of my machines are "offline" and do not have access
to download from AMO. This means they can not update
user-installed extensions when new versions come out. I also
save backup space by not having copies of extensions in each
user's Thunderbird Profile.

Using an existing user profile, I test upgraded to TB 38.0.1. I
see that the Lightning is now included in Program Files\Mozilla
Thunderbird\distribution\extensions\
This causes my end-user profile to install the extension
locally/per-user. Now I have Lightning installed twice (my
old/original install in Program Files, and the new one copied to
my user profile). We also run SRP (Software Restriction
Policies) and now get the same error mentioned in comment 6: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1113183#c6
. I could whitelist the .dll in question, but it would be more
preferred to keep Lightning back in Program Files where it is
already trusted.

Some questions:
Is there an option I can include in the .ini file that will NOT
install Lightning with TB 38.0.1?
If no, is their some other automated way/ preference to set ?

Some random thought/ideas:
-Could my desktop management software immediately remove the
Lightning extension from Program Files\Mozilla
Thunderbird\distribution\extensions\ right after installation?
-Is there a way to unpack/repack the Thunderbird installer to
remove this?

Thanks for all thought/ideas/opinions.
