OK. I guess building zlib devel and using that is possible but I can't give
you a recipe.

Only by building rr and runnig the tests.
IIRC 3.8 is the earliest kernel version I've ever had rr working on.
seccomp-bpf was added in 3.5 so rr will be slow on kernels older than that,
if it works at all.
