I know what I am doing, because I have developing tools in my computer to help change and work with Microsoft if there is a bug in the system. If u are too frighten to update to the New JAVA don't make a big deal about it. Just don't do it.<br>

In essense, there is a volunteer trying to adjust the Java-7 code to make things fit<br>
on SL, we would miss a couple [virtually unneeded?] features but otherwise it should work,<br>
and he has caught the interest of an Apple person already [see the reply there],<br>
yet I'm sure there's no way they'll actively pursue _official_ support for SL<br>
with the political situation there [as I see things].<br>

While I'm here, I want to state another thing:<br>

The Java project used to say<br>
"Write Once, Run Anywhere"<br>
or similar to that effect.<br>
I know I can keep Java-6 as-is<br>
'til the cows come home,<br>
but there would be no more<br>
official support for it.<br>

One project I'm worried about here<br>
is the Java junk that are on the<br>
Bluray discs and players etc.<br>
I joined the VLC subprojects<br>
dealing with bluray+aacs support,<br>
some time ago.<br>
(I've also bought a license for<br>
the MakeMKV product.)<br>
I'm sure Java-5 and -6<br>
were sufficient levels<br>
at the start of those VLC projects.<br>
Now I feel like I will be<br>
"up the creek without a paddle"<br>
as the saying goes.<br>

So instead of relying solely on<br>
Apple, Sun, and now Oracle,<br>
I am having to jump this fruity ship<br>
to go _full_ F/OSS,<br>
and learn tons more than I really wanted,<br>
and $pend tons more than I really planned,<br>
just to have an up-to-date system<br>
and myself comfortable with it.<br>

(I'll say quickly that IIRC this will be the<br>
third time I've been burned by Apple alone.<br>
The first time was with the PPC/IBM debacle.<br>
I won't say anything further on that<br>
other than I'm _sure_ we have not been<br>
told the _whole_ story on that.<br>
