Are you saying you have completely empty rectangles - or are they empty but with a title?

Mine are populated with websites but I don't see any images in the rectangle (which might be a setting on my end or that feature might be disabled b/c of privacy issues (i.e. accidentally showing a screen shot of bank info)). So if you're not having the rectangles at least populated with websites and acting as links, then that sounds like a bug/configuration issue
It requires the installation of an extension called Foxtab which will
populate the empty rectangles.
If that's, required, that's a bug.
No add-ons should be required for the rectangles in the new tab page to be filled with thumbnails.
Well, a bug then it must remain :-) .

I have started FF is Safe Mode just to see what would happen and...... nothing happens.

Not having these empty rectangles populated doesn't worry me. I asked the question because I was wondering what they were all about. And, if you say, that using Foxtab add-on is not the solution but rather indicates a bug then these rectangles can remain empty and I'll just keep on using Bookmarks to get were I want to go :-) .
And thanks for your help.
