They appear on about:newtab, right? If so, they should be filled with frequently-used sites.<br>
If it doesn't fill automatically after a while, you might have flipped a pref or something.<br>

Surely there must be a blurb somewhere from Mozilla explaining all this? I have been privately given a couple of URLs re this but none give the answer as to why these rectangles are not populated. And my wife uses the stock-standard FF and she, too, doesn't have them populated.</blockquote>

You might try searching BMO, WikiMO and/or dev-apps-firefox for newtab, new tab, new tab page, etc. I think this might get you the results you're looking for, as I think is is what the project was referred to (it was the first new tab page with actual content, so the ambiguous subject name makes _some_ sense).<span></span></div>
