Following our announcement of the Open Science summer school course (https://www.utrechtsummerschool.nl/courses/science/open-science-and-scholarship-changing-your-research-workflow we
received some feedback on the pricing of this course, especially from the perspective of inclusivity.

We think these are fair questions and we are sensitive to the issue and looking to improve. Ideally the barrier to participation in these kind of courses should be as low as
possible. While our intention is not to make money, we need to balance costs with fees. In addition, we were not completely free in setting the course price, and have faced some discussions on setting
a price to reflect 'market value' instead of actual costs only.

The course fee of €750 includes €200 for housing, which is optional. The fee for the course itself (€550) will be used to cover the costs of logistics, course materials and
reimbursement of travel/stay/hours of (guest) lecturers who need that reimbursement. As this is the first time we organize this course we do not yet know how that will work out precisely, as it depends on the number
of participants. Any surplus will be invested in future installments of the course, to improve its contents or towards fee reduction.

Apart from the monetary aspect of this we will make the course more open by sharing all the materials CC-BY or CC-0 at the time of the course (August 7-11). These can be reused and built on
by anyone in any form. As far as time permits we will also try to engage with others using or commenting on these materials, and use the materials to contribute to other Open Science education initiatives.

by some 3000 people from across the world.

are on fair and realistic pricing for IRL courses. Please share your ideas on the matter, whether it is on the pricing for this Open Science course specifically or more generally on accessibility
of this type of courses.
