<h2>Grants & Funding</h2>
<ul>
<li>Applications are currently open for two grants from the <a href="http://bitss.org/">Berkeley Initiative for Transparency in Social Science (BITSS)</a>: <a href="http://www.bitss.org/ssmart/">Grants for Social Science Meta Analysis and Research Transparency (SSMART)</a> for up to $30,000 USD (closing September 6), and the <a href="http://www.bitss.org/prizes/leamer-rosenthal-prizes/">Leamer-Rosenthal Prizes for Open Social Science</a> for up to $15,000 USD (closing September 30).</li>
<li>The <a href="http://centerforopenscience.org/">Center for Open Science</a> has added <a href="http://centerforopenscience.org/integrationgrants/?utm_content=buffer09d15&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer">many more grant opportunities</a>
 for developers interested in helping connect a long list of open 
science services and tools to the Open Science Framework. Grant amounts 
are open to negotiation.</li>

<li><a href="https://twitter.com/digitalflaneuse">Laura Norén</a> is calling for comments on <a href="http://astronomy-software-index.github.io/2015-workshop/">a proposed scheme for software citation in astronomy</a>; join the conversation under the <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23astroware&src=typd">#astroware</a> hashtag on Twitter.</li>
<li><a href="https://twitter.com/eu_sciencehub">The European Commission’s Joint Research Council</a>
 is studying how citizen science projects manage their data; if you are 
involved in running a citizen science project, get involved by filling 
out <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/CSDataManagement">this survey</a>.</li>
<li><a href="https://twitter.com/jjmerelo">Juan Julián Merelo-Guervós</a> & Pablo García-Sánchez are conducting an experiment in browser-based evolutionary computation; upon visiting <a href="https://nodio-jmerelo.rhcloud.com/">their experiment’s web page</a>, the visitor’s browser begins modeling chromosome mutation and reporting a subset of results back to the study.</li>
<li>Robert Kaplan & <a href="https://twitter.com/drveronicairvin">Veronica Irvin</a> found in a recent review of cardiovascular research that <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0132382">reported null results have significantly increased since 2000</a>; the authors report a strong correlation between null result reporting and study pre-registration.</li>

<li><a href="https://twitter.com/whydoitweet">Derek Groen</a> and <a href="http://www.2020science.net/people/ben-calderhead">Ben Calderhead</a> wrote an article on <a href="http://elifesciences.org/content/4/e09944">Science Hackathons</a>
 as a vehicle for increasing visibility and connectedness of research 
for early career scientists. Their article contains a complete sketch of
 the life-cycle of running a Science Hackathon, from planning to 
maintaining momentum afterwards.</li>
<li><em>BMC Biology</em> editor <a href="https://twitter.com/emmabsaxon">Emma Saxon</a> began <a href="http://blogs.biomedcentral.com/on-biology/2015/08/06/wrong-picture/?utm_campaign=shareaholic&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=socialnetwork">a series on producing quality figures for papers</a>
 to improve research transparency and reproducibility. This editorial 
series comes on the heels of the creation of a Minimum Standards of 
Reporting checklist submitting authors are now required to fill out, in 
order to help raise the standard of completeness and transparency in 
reporting.</li>
<li>Nature printed an article describing <a href="http://www.nature.com/articles/nbt.3309.epdf?shared_access_token=1pOMVYynLjICD25z_ODRVtRgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0OU0u5ymr3GHLxg1OGCwg3VfpxQFd9zfRL7WsGpht08f3D1zjXjUv6uZRgJ48IhVhLswpCD-Pu4uXxmOO7jh348_d7HIqjn3CfXqJTgIq3AlGgKqCkjSGB6-iNhFiwm_P4%3D">the recent movement in open personal health data</a>, including efforts from projects like <a href="https://www.openhumans.org/">Open Humans</a> and <a href="http://humanfoodproject.com/americangut/">American Gut</a>, to overcome technical and privacy hurdles in the space and create a framework for data sharing.</li>

 a semester-long workshop series on the basic skills needed to start
