Hi!

We, the Firefox Telemetry team, are planning to stop sending some ancient things that are broadly unused.

What are we removing?
Firefox
clients will no longer send childPayloads, saved-session pings (from
Desktop Firefox), UITelemetry, Telemetry Experiments, and TelemetryLog.

When?
Firefox 61 (at the earliest)

Why?
None of them are maintained, none of them have future development, all of them have replacements that are much better.

What replacements?
childPayloads - Scalars, Histograms, and Events can be recorded from parent and child processes.
saved-session
pings on Desktop - “main” pings contain essentially the same data.
Fennec saved-session pings will not be removed at this time.
UITelemetry
- Simple UI interaction data can be recorded using Scalars or
Histograms. More complicated flows can be recorded with Event Telemetry.
Telemetry Experiments - Shield Studies allow running experiments across all users.
TelemetryLog - You can use Event Telemetry or Scalars, depending on the use-case.

What do I need to do?
Near
as we can tell, everyone has already stopped using the data we’re
currently submitting via these means, so you don’t need to do anything.
Thanks for reading, though!

If you -are- using this data, or suspect you might be, please reach out to me, :chutten, by email or IRC. We'll figure it out together.

Who else have you told?

This has been communicated
through the cross-functional meeting, over the data team mailing list,
to fx-data-dev (anyone who has expressed an interest in Data Stuff): and now here.

Can I help?
Sure! The bugs for
removing reporting will be filed and fulfilled fairly rapidly, but that
won’t cull the collection code. Look for bugs under bug 1438873 to offer
help or to just follow along.

What if I need help?
Please
contact :gfritzsche, :chutten, :dexter or the team. This goes for if you
have any questions about what we’ve said above or if you aren’t sure
whether or not you actually are using any of these things that are going
away.

With <3 from the Firefox Telemetry Team
