<div dir="ltr"><span style="font-size:12.800000190734863px">Hi-</span><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px"><br></div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px">We have a Firefox first-run experience at e.g. <a href="http://www.mozilla.org/firefox/51.0.1/firstrun/" target="_blank">www.mozilla.org/firefox/51.0.<wbr>1/firstrun/</a>. This page is intended to begin a relationship with a new user that we hope will last a long time. We are always optimizing it to that end. </div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px"><br></div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px">Starting on 2016/11/20, we noticed a _huge_ increase in visitors to <a href="http://www.mozilla.org/firefox/features" target="_blank">www.mozilla.org/firefox/<wbr>features</a>. This is a pre-download marketing page (and it's a bit out of date). The amount of traffic it's getting now is astonishing and surprising -- before 11/20, it got practically none.</div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px"><br></div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px">I just installed Ubuntu (16.10) in a virtual machine on MacOS. Firefox (49) is in the Ubuntu launch bar. When I start Firefox, it opens a tab to <a href="http://www.mozilla.org/firefox/features" target="_blank">www.mozilla.org/firefox/<wbr>features</a>. </div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px"><br></div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px">Here are my big questions:</div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px">1. What changed on 11/20 to cause an instantaneous, sustained, and very large increase in traffic to /features? </div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px">2. Can we choose where that traffic is going, or is it beyond our control?</div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px">3. Are people launching all those browsers, or are they bots?</div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px"><br></div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px">I'm emailing this list because I hope some people reading...</div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px">* ... have other operating systems/distributions and can tell me if a vanilla Firefox profile loads /features. What OS? What version of Firefox?</div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px">* ... pay attention to development on some linux distribution, and might know what changed on 11/20. (One thought: Iceweasel -> Firefox on debian?)</div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px">* ... know stuff about Selenium or other test frameworks, and/or AWS and other cloud providers (and/or something in the dark) that might explain very large volumes of traffic doing the same unexpected thing all of a sudden.</div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px"><br></div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px">Feel free to reach out directly.</div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px"><br></div><div style="font-size:12.800000190734863px">Thank you!</div><div><br></div>-- <br><div class="gmail_signature"><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr">Justin Crawford<div><a href="mailto:hoosteeno@mozilla.com" target="_blank">hoosteeno@mozilla.com</a><br></div></div></div></div></div>
