DockDockGo has performed a survey[1] in the US with
results that are quite unsettling. Around 75% of the
surveyed people can't correctly identify the privacy
benefits it provides and 66% *overestimate* the benefits.
This is terrible, as it may potentially lead to people's
privacy being compromised while they think they are
protected.
We have always had some wording around what private browsing
is and is not in about:privatebrowsing and other browsers
have shown similar text in their UI, and clearly this isn't
enough.
What else can be done about this? I think this can use some
UX thought...
PS. The other interesting thing in the survey was 84% of the
people being surveyed said they would consider switching to
another major browser if it provided more privacy features,
followed by a pitch about 83% of the people saying they would
consider trying another browser if it offered a private browsing
mode that uses a search engine that didn't track your searches.

... the inverse of which, to state the obvious, implies that there's
a serious first mover penalty here. So if we write really
effective/scary "the government / the owner of your internet
connection / your employer / the websites you visit might still be
tracking you" comments without other browsers doing the same, people
will incorrectly start believing that our private browsing
functionality is objectively worse than that of other browsers. So
changing this only works if we do this together with other browsers.

The other way to fix this is by integrating e.g. tor support to
provide actual added privacy / anonymity (ie change software to
match people's beliefs rather than vice versa). I believe we've been
integrating some patches already, but perhaps there's more we can do
in that space?
