Reader mode in desktop version?

That team's patches are here; they were abandoned for a while and so are 
a bit out of date:

But, good news: A new student team has been working on adding Reader 
Mode to the new "Metro" UI for Firefox on Windows 8.  They started by 
updating parts of the desktop Firefox patches, and are actively 
submitting patches for review:

The patches in that bug add core Readability and about:reader code to 
Toolkit, where it can eventually be used on desktop, Metro, and 
Android.  There's still some work to get the desktop UI finished and 
landed, but this should bring it much closer.
