Or would it be better for AssertionError to have another field (say,
"expression") storing that, and then optionally use that in the
default value of "message", which could be slightly more informative
(e.g., "Assertion failed: <expression>")?

Maybe that's unnecessary, but I thought I'd throw it out there.
