I this question in /r/Firefox and was pointed to this mailing list. I am looking for more information on what can cause Firefox to view a places.sqlite file as corrupt, and create a new one.

I'm working on upgrading Firefox in our environment from v52 32-bit to the latest version on 64-bit. Firefox creates a new profile for the new installation, and copying the places.sqlite from the old profile to the new profile can restore
those bookmarks for the new installation and profile. When I do those steps manually, it works every single time. However, when the places.sqlite is moved programatically via script or program, when Firefox is launched it changes the places.sqlite to places.sqlite.corrupt
and creates a new empty places.sqlite so the user does not have their bookmarks restored. An in-place upgrade of FF is possible however I’ve only seen that work upgrading 32-bit to the newest 32-bit Firefox and I would much prefer to move to 64-bit if at all
possible.

A manual seems to always work, however a scripted copy ( under the user’s context ) sometimes works and sometimes fails. Any information regarding the places.sqlite corruption or other advice would be much appreciated!
