[Mozilla Enterprise] Verifying Policies.Json Settings

How does one verify the policies.json file is working as intended?  After configuring some items and then going into about:config I still see the original settings, which is how I believe the auditors review things.  I have noticed that if I have a typo or syntax issue with the file, some settings are not as expected.  Should I just stick with Mozilla.cfg and locking preferences?
