I found the same lack of documentation. Try this example:

reg add
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Mozilla\Thunderbird\Extensions"
/v "marcoagpinto at mail.telepac.pt" /d "%PROGRAMFILES%\Mozilla
Thunderbird\extensions\marcoagpinto at mail.telepac.pt.xpi" /t REG_SZ

In my experience, it's required with Firefox and not always with
Thunderbird; and with Thunderbird, some extensions require it and others
don't. So I think there's still areas about this new method that I'm not
yet understanding.
